Thanksgiving at WRLR 2024
Finally the cool days have arrived! 22 degrees is keeping things a bit icy but the new barn is comfortably insulated and the cement floor is buried with soft and warm straw. Llamas love the snow, and usually just come into a barn briefly for grain then it’s right back out again!
We are able to use the barn for training the new cries to be on halters and how to walk nicely when led. Thanksgiving gave us some additional llama training time, since work hours allowed for time off.
Llamas learn quickly - they are so very smart! Training takes just a few hours using a slightly modified Mallon method. It not only makes it nice to walk a behaved llama when they are young, but it is respectful to them so that when older, they are calm when they need to come in for herd health or some other event. A 400 pound untrained llama can be a danger to themselves, to you and to others! Taking the time to train them when they’re young makes your time with them so much more fun throughout their lives!
At this time of year we have to be mindful of quickly changing weather conditions which can cause rapid temperature drops and even unexpected snow. Here in Helena, predicting weather is a little hard, since being on the Rocky Mountain front can mean that weather will go around us or it can suddenly dump a lot of snow right on us. We are at just under 5000’ elevation, so every day can bring a weather surprise!
The llamas are sturdy and amazingly resilient creatures and even the harsh Montana winters seem very enjoyable to them. We are grateful to all our llama friends and supporters of our llama business - you know you are purchasing llamas that are very well cared for and trained to provide you with a lifetime of fun with your llama!
We are thankful for all of God’s blessings and we are so happy to share our llama ranch with you - it may be your time to add a WRLR llama to your herd! Or maybe you are just starting out and want to start with the best! We are here to help guide your llama experience to be fun and rewarding.
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Windy Ridge Llama Ranch!
